We must act now against superbugs, says Christian medic

by Aaron James

Steve Fouch, from the Christian Medical Fellowship, also said more funding is needed for research into tackling superbugs.

He made the comments after a report said ten million more people could die every year by 2050 because of drug-resistant infections.

It also said it would cost the world £63bn.

Mr Fouch told Premier's News Hour: "I think the scale, the economic cost is some of the things that's really come to light.

"This isn't just a problem to do with illness; it's something that's going to affect every aspect of our economy and our lifestyle and everything in the years to come, unless we do something about it - now.

"This needs a global response. It needs all the governments around the world to do something about it, it needs all the drug companies around the world to do something about it.

"But we as individuals can also do something about it. Going to your GP for antibiotics for something like an ordinary cold or a runny nose is pointless because the antibiotics won't actually do anything.

"Unless we really take concerted action and put effort into the research that's already being done at the moment and fund it more, we're not going to get on top of the problem in time before it starts to run out of control.

"It is cause for concern and for concerted action."
