Donald Trump has told reporters that “Catholics loved” an image of him wearing papal robes posted to his social media account.

In response to a question on whether Catholics would have been offended by the image, Trump said that anyone unhappy with it was unable to “take a joke”.

“The Catholics loved it,” he remarked.

“I have no idea where it came from. Maybe it was AI, but I know nothing about it,” the president said of the image. “I just saw it last evening. Actually, my wife thought it was cute.”

Trump then joked: “To the best of my knowledge, popes aren’t big on getting married.”

Last week, he told reporters that he would like to see himself selected to be the next pontiff.
