Donald Trump has told a reporter that he would like to be the next Pope.
When boarding Marine One en route to Michigan, the president was asked who he would like to see elected to the papal seat.
“As Pope? I’d like to be the next Pope. That’d be my number one choice,” Trump said.
“No, I don’t know," he joked, "I have no preference. I know we have a cardinal that happens to be out of a place called New York that’s very good, so we’ll see what happens.”
Cardinal Timothy M Dolan is the Archbishop of New York. During Trump’s election campaign, he hosted the now-president at the Al Smith dinner, an election tradition which Kamala Harris skipped.
At the time, Cardinal Dolan commented: “This hasn’t happened in 40 years, since Walter Mondale turned down the invitation. And remember, he lost 49 out of 50 states. I don't want to say there's a direct connection there, but … we're not giving up.”
The Vatican conclave to choose the next Pope is set to begin on May 7th.
