Queens award recognises "humble" cathedral tomb dusters

Dusting tombs, arranging flowers, library volunteering and stewarding concerts are among contributions the group has made at the Wiltshire landmark, which boost Britain's tallest church spire.

Ben Elliot and Ann Harries, who have each been supporting the building each for 48 years, received the Queens Award for Voluntary Service on behalf of the group from Mrs Sarah Troughton, the Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire.

Mrs Sarah Troughton said: "It was a huge pleasure to present the award to the Salisbury Cathedral Volunteers and to formally recognise their dedicated service in support of the Cathedral and city over many years.

"They play such a significant and valued role and seeing then all gathered together was a reminder of the scale and range of their work, something of which the Cathedral is justifiably proud."

The Very Revd June Osborne, Dean of Salisbury added: "These are the individuals who, humbly and loyally, form part of the experience and memory of the Cathedral localy, nationally and internationally!

"From as far afield as Japan, Australia and the USA, in Germany and across Europe, people know us because they have encountered our volunteers, they support those less well off in our community on our behalf and hundreds of school children carry away memories of the Cathedral for life because of workshops and events run by them. What a legacy!"

More than 300 of the 650 volunteers were able to attend the presentation on Wednesday, which was followed by a drinks party on the Cathedral's West Lawn.

The Queens Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK and it was created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee.
