Philippines 'panic buying' as Typhoon Hagupit approaches

by Desmond Busteed

Haiyan was the most powerful typhoon ever recorded over land. It tore though the central Philippines in November 2013, leaving more than 7,000 dead or missing.

Typhoon Hagupit is expected to hit areas devastated by Haiyan last year. It's due to make landfall on Saturday and if it continues on the current path, the UN estimates that 4.5 million people will be within a 76-kilometre radius of damaging winds.

Thousands of people, many still living in temporary shelters after Typhoon Haiyan last year, have been told to go to evacuation centres.

Christian charity World Vision Philippines is on standby and is prepared to respond. The charity says an emergency fund is in place for basic essentials and staff are ready to be deployed to potentially impacted areas. Emergency kits for at least 1,000 families are ready and available for distribution.

Speaking to Premier, World Vision's Sian Merrylees, said: "People here are so scared. They have been panic buying and now the stores are empty. Most people have moved to evacuation centres."
