Pete Greig explains the importance of the church during Ukraine invasion as he shares prayer guidance

by Sophie Drew

Christian author and 24-7 Prayer founder Pete Greig has shared his thoughts on the invasion of Ukraine, and how Christians can pray effectively as Russia continues their attempts to overthrow their neighbouring nation.

As a man who has spent many years sharing the importance in prayer, Pete is well-placed to offer advice when it comes to speaking to God.

Now, his organisation has dedicated themselves to helping those in Ukraine, offering a wealth of resources and instructions for those wishing to pray for Ukraine.

He was moved to intervene when reflecting on the Christian population embroiled in the war.

He said: "The first thing is I keep praying for the church in Ukraine - 70 per cent of people in Ukraine refer to themselves as Christians.

"So this is a more Christian nation than America, than the UK.

"So the church has got an extraordinarily important role to play in making peace, in binding up broken hearts and actually, in preaching the gospel, because demand for Bibles has gone through the roof in Ukraine, people inevitably asking profound questions.

"So yes, we need to pray into the political stuff, we need to pray in all sorts of areas, but start with praying for the church because they are like the bridgehead at the kingdom of God into a very, very broken world."

He has described the events happening in Ukraine as 'demonic'. encouraging Christians to pray for those suffering as a result of the invasion.

He continued: "We just live in such extraordinary times - when COVID happened, we said 'it can't get worse', we come out of COVID and we find ourselves in the middle of a war just a few hours away in Europe.

"I think one of the things I sense God saying to the church is, that this is a time for us to look to Him and to trust Him and to turn to Him in prayer as never, ever before.

"Our politicians are doing all that they can, and we should pray for them, but ultimately, we're told in Ephesians 6:12 that our battle is not against President Putin, 'our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers in high places.'

"When children are being killed, when hundreds of thousands are being displaced, there's something demonic that's going on, not just something socio-politically and economically going on."

Pete's advice for prayer is simple; just make sure you hit the three crucial letters.

He suggests: "Remember the three P's. It really works.

"The first P is pray for the people affected - so that's thinking about those who are displaced, those who are bereaved, those who just frightened, those who are hiding out in their basements, those who are fighting on both sides, think about the people affected.

"The second P is to pray for pastors and priests - so church. "They themselves are affected. I mean, they're ordinary people who are scared, and they've got families to look after, and often very courageously, they stay put, when others are fleeing, and we need to pray for them because they will be doing more funerals.
"They'll be seeking to preach the gospel. There'll be seeking to fulfil Isaiah 61.

"Then the third thing is always pray for politicians and peacemakers - so obviously, in this situation, we're praying for the President of Ukraine, but also President Putin, and for others like Prime Minister Johnson, President Biden, as they seek to make very, very important decisions."
