Nigeria: 737,000 people displaced by Boko Haram last year

The report released by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) today, revealed that Nigeria has the highest level of internal displacement across Africa.

IDMC reported that Islamic militant group Boko Haram has fuelled "an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in the north-east of the country".

Boko Haram has displaced more than 2 million people within Nigeria since the group began their insurgency six years ago.

The terrorist group targets Christians, bombing churches and killing those who do not convert to Islam.

Infamously, the group kidnapped 276 girls - mostly Christian - in April 2014. Many are believed to have been married off to Boko Haram fighters.

The IDMC report also found that a total of 12.4 million Africans were displaced last year because of violence and natural disasters. This figure is 30 per cent of the total number of people internally displaced by conflict globally.
