Christian rock band Newsboys have issued a statement following allegations of sexual assault, grooming, and substance abuse against former lead singer Michael Tait.
The allegations, which reportedly date back to 2004, emerged this week. Tait, who departed the band in January 2025, has not publicly responded.
In a statement released Wednesday, the band said they were “devastated” by the reports and expressed support for those who have come forward.
“Our hearts were shattered when we learned of the allegations involving drug abuse and inappropriate sexual conduct by our former lead singer, Michael Tait,” the group said. “While Michael has not publicly addressed the accusations, we are devastated by the implications.”
The band said their thoughts are with the individuals who shared their experiences and called on any other potential victims to come forward.
“We unequivocally condemn all forms of sexual assault,” the statement added.
The group said Tait disclosed to them in January that he had been “living a double life" but that they "never imagined that it could be this bad".
“As husbands and fathers to fourteen children between us, this news is deeply personal,” the band said. “We are horrified, heartbroken, and angry. In many ways, we feel deceived.”
Newsboys, formed in the 1980s, are among the most prominent bands in contemporary Christian music. Tait, previously of DC Talk, joined the group in 2009.
No criminal charges have been announced.
