Memorial Mass for murdered priest Jacques Hamel

by Aaron James

Father Jacques Hamel, 86, was killed when two men stormed into his church in Saint-Etienne-Du-Rouvray while he was celebrating Mass with parishioners. He was remembered in Rouen Cathedral this morning.

Another parishioner was seriously injured.

The attack prompted British police to warn UK churches to review their security measures and be "alert" and "vigilant".

Yesterday Christians went to pray with Muslims at the town mosque, where they said the two murderers were not were not part of Islam, civilisation or humanity.

Around 30 Muslims then went to Fr Hamel's former church to pray, where they received applause from Catholics as a show of solidarity with them.

It later emerged that the Muslim community have refused to bury one of the murderers, 19-year-old Adel Kermiche, because of his actions.

Mohammed Karabila, the president of the local Muslim association, told Le Parisien: "We're not going to taint Islam with this person.

"We won't participate in preparing the body or the burial."
