Lobby your MP on climate change, Christians told

by Hannah Tooley

Greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere reached a record high last year.

A Christian conservationist has told Premier that he is deeply concerned about the potential for hotter temperatures, rising sea levels and more extreme weather events such as heat waves and floods.

Andy Lester, Director of the Christian conservation charity, AROCHA, told Premier's News Hour that this has the potential to be disastrous: "With just a two degree rise it will put 62 million people into extreme poverty by 2013 in South East Asia alone.

"There are reports that indicate we could be loosing 30-40% of our animal and bird species."

He was speaking after the World Meteorological Organisation revealed levels of the main gas - carbon dioxide - averaged 398 parts per million in 2014, but have breached the 400 barrier since then.

He said it is key that Christians help put a stop to this: "Pray as church communities, get down on your knees as individuals and pray. Pray as home groups and be incredibly prayful for positive outcomes that will lead to a positive future for our planet."

Mr Lester said that action needs to be taken: "The key now is to lobby your MP. Go and see them, say you are a concerned Christian, so that when votes come up in parliament our MPs think 'actually, our Christian constituents are standing up and saying they do not agree with the way things are going.' "
