Kidnapped Syrian priest released

Fr Hanna Jallouf was taken from Knayeh, a small Christian village, near the border with Turkey by a group linked to al-Qaeda.

Twenty Christians were taken along with the priest, but their whereabouts is not known.

Premier understands Fr Jallouf is now at the St Joseph Convent in Knayeh.

In a statement, the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land said: "The Custody of the Holy Land announces that Fr. Hanna Jallouf has been released this morning."

Militants from the Islamic Jabhat Al-Nusra group have been blamed for his abduction.

The extremist organisation is a branch of Al-Qaeda working in Syria and Lebanon.

It has rejected inclusion within the Islamic State group but is responsible for a number of suicide bomb attacks in Syria.
