Iraq Christians meet top US advisor

Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes discussed the situation in the country where Islamist militant group ISIS has forced thousands to abandon their homes.

He said he "condemned the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant's [ISIS] ongoing attacks on the Christian and minority communities in northern Iraq and the group's systematic destruction of religious sites."

He told the representatives the US government was actively involved in helping to form a new Iraqi government "that can address the rights and legitimate concerns of all of Iraq's diverse communities, including Iraq's Christians."

He added: "Only then can Iraq successfully and sustainably confront the security and humanitarian challenges all of its citizens face in the common fight against ISIL [ISIS]."

ISIS had given Christians in the city of Mosul an ultimatum to convert to Islam, pay or tax or face death.

The group has taken over large parts of Iraq which has forced the US to send military advisers to help.

Sarah Carruthers is from Agape and the UK co-ordinator for the Global aid network which is working with partners in Iraq.

She told Premier's News Hour: "We're seeing already that many of the charities are working together, uniting in ways that they maybe haven't done before.

"So we can come alongside them, be praying for them to have strength and to coordinate their resources so that they can respond."
