Iraq Christian radio station appeals for people to come home

FM102.9 Baghdad was set up by Pastor Maher Fouad, who leads New Testament Baptist Church in the Iraqi capital.

The station's been encouraging Christians and others for nearly ten years, and reaches a 50-mile radius of Baghdad. It previously had 10 staff members; however seven have since emigrated leaving three remaining.

According to New Testament Baptist Church's website, in 2010, a sister station was set up in the southern city of Basra, which also broadcasts to Kuwait and Southern Iran.

Salmah Habib, a presenter on the station, told the BBC: "People are leaving the country, and this is bad for our nation. We want people to come back to this country, we want them to feel the security despite the dire conditions.

"I never expected all of this to happen. I never thought they will come and take my husband from our home. He was taken and never came back."

Maher Fouad told the BBC: "Everyone calls us. We get calls from Christians and Muslims. We do not differentiate between any of our callers.

"My duties as a pastor require me to stay in the country."
