The American 'Coffee in the Morning' star, known for his raunchy lyrics said he grew up with a strict religious mother.
Speaking to contactmusic.com he said that he spent most of his week attending church and bible study before his music career.
His mother had hoped that he would continue preaching and make it into a full time job.
In Britain's Weekend magazine he said: "My mother was really into her religion, and I was, too, to be honest with you.
"But at the same time I was torn, because as a kid you want to do things.
"And my mom was very keen on keeping me away from temptation.
"I was not a part of the social scene in high school.
"I wasn't going to parties, I wasn't drinking, I wasn't smoking, I definitely wasn't smoking weed, I wasn't having sex.
"Late bloomer. Really late bloomer."
He says he went to church three times a week for Bible studies and says his mother had wanted him to pursue a career in religion: "She wanted the church to be my primary focus. Preaching."
Once Miguel moved to study at university he stopped going to church, but says he is still religious: "It was like living a double life. I was doing a lot of things I'm not supposed to be doing, that are viewed by the Bible as immoral.
"So I decided, if I was going to do that, I wasn't going to pretend to be something that I'm not... I'm still very much in touch with my spirituality. I never gave up on God. I just found my own way."
