Franklin Graham rebuked by pastors

Franklin Graham said on Facebook: "If a police officer tells you to lay down face first with your hands behind your back, you lay down face first with your hands behind your back. It's as simple as that. Even if you think the police officer is wrong - YOU OBEY."

Revd Graham used Romans 13:1 to support his message, which says humans should submit to authority, before saying "most police shootings can be avoided".

More than 200,000 'liked' Franklin Graham's post, which can be viewed in full here.

However a group of American pastors, theologians and Christian directors condemned Mr Graham's post in an open letter, saying: "You have sinned against us, fellow members of the body of Christ."

"Your words hurt and influenced thousands. Therefore, we must respond publicly so that those you hurt might know you have received a reply and the hundreds of thousands you influenced might know that following your lead on this issue will break the body of Christ further.

"Frankly, Revd Graham, your insistence that 'Blacks, Whites, Latinos, and everybody else' 'Listen up,' was crude, insensitive, and paternalistic. Your comments betrayed the confidence that your brothers and sisters in Christ, especially those of colour, have afforded your father's ministry for decades."

The full letter can be read here.

Policeman Darren Wilson killed 18-year-old Michael Brown in August 2014 in the city of Ferguson, in the US State of Missouri.

Michael Brown was wanted by police for stealing tobacco. He was unarmed when Darren Wilson shot him 12 times following an altercation.

A grand jury did not indict Darren Wilson for his shooting of Michael Brown, sparking protests across the world.
