Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo was shown a yellow card on Sunday for displaying a message of faith after scoring a goal to bring his team within touching distance of the Premier League title.

After scoring in a 3-1 win against Tottenham at Anfield, the Dutch player immediately ripped off his Liverpool shirt to reveal a white vest, bearing the words: "I belong to Jesus."

The vest mirrored a shirt worn by Brazilian footballer Kaka, after his 2007 Champions League final win over Liverpool.

As Gakpo revealed his shirt in celebration, he was shown a yellow card by referee Tom Bramall. FIFA rules state that players’ equipment “must not have any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images”.

Liverpool won 5-1 against Spurs, meaning the Premier League win is secured for the Reds, who still have two games left of the season.

They will return to Anfield to lift the trophy on May 25th after their game against Crystal Palace.
