Big Church Festival: Eastbourne pastor named as man who died

by Kelly Valencia

A church in Eastbourne has confirmed to Premier Christian News that the 41-year-old man who died at the Big Church Festival in West Sussex was one of its pastors, Robert Guanco.

Sussex Police said the man died at the scene after a sign fell and injured a number of people at the festival on Friday, 28 August.

Emergency services were called to Wiston Park at around 3.38pm following reports that “a sign had fallen and injured a number of people”.

At least six people were injured in the incident, according to festival organisers, who described the death as “tragic” and said they were “devastated” by what had happened.

In a statement, Jesus the Living Water Church Eastbourne announced Pastor Robert’s death and described him as a “faithful servant of God”, a loving husband and a devoted father.

"We are mourning, grieving, praying, and trusting in the Lord during this incredibly difficult time. There are many things we may never fully understand, and our hearts may struggle to make sense of what has happened. Yet, even in our deepest sorrow, we continue to trust in the sovereignty of God," the statement read.

It continued: "We take comfort in believing that he is now home with the Lord, free from suffering and resting in eternal glory. We hold on knowing that he hears these precious words," before citing passages from Isaiah 55 and Isaiah 57, reflecting on grief, faith and the belief that God’s plans are not always understood.

The church said Pastor Robert had touched the lives of many people through his faith and service.

“His life, his faith, his love, and his service to God will never be forgotten,” the statement said.

In a further message to Premier Christian News, the church thanked people for their prayers and support and said it also plans to establish a GoFundMe page to support Pastor Robert’s bereaved family.

Pastor Robert is survived by his wife, Isay, and daughter, Ellie.
