Mourners have defiantly shouted "Praise to Jesus" and "Jesus is great" as they carried the body of a Christian man beaten to death after being accused of blasphemy.
Nazir Masih, 72, was killed after a mob set upon him on May 25th in Sargodha, about 150 miles south of Pakistan's capital Islamabad.
Mr Masih was a businessman and owned a shoe factory. He had been accused of burning pages of the Koran.
The casket was draped in black cloth with a crucifix on it, ABC News reported.
Tensions in the region have escalated since the incident and the funeral took place under high security. The police have registered cases against 500 people for attacking Masih’s home. Authorities tried to rescue him but were met with strong resistance.
It was the pensioner's neighbours who first accused him, saying they saw him defacing the Islamic holy book outside the home he lived in with his son.
Christians in the area are now fearing for their safety. According to OSV News police managed to rescue 10 Christians after the initial attack but the threat is more widespread.
Many families in the area have left their homes due to fear of retaliation.
John Pontifex is from Aid to the Church in Need and has connections in the country.
"So in this case, it seems (a) first report was lodged with the authorities on 25th of May by a member of the TLP," he said.
Tehreek-e-Labbaik (TLP) is a far-right Islamic political party in Pakistan.
"Unfortunately, they have taken it upon themselves to be implicated in a number of these attacks," Pontifex added.
He now fears there may be more attacks.
"The Archbishop of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Archbishop, Joseph Arshad released a statement indicating that his community feel victimised," he said.
"Those were his words... 'victimised by these attacks', and that it's absolutely urgently needed, that those responsible for false accusations of blasphemy to be brought to justice, and that more violence like this should be stopped and prevented from happening in future."
Pakistan is a majority Islamic country with 97% identifying as Muslims. Blasphemy is illegal and this gives fertile ground for Christians to become scapegoats and routinely blamed for things that aren't their fault, said Pontifex.
"And it's clear that although Christians only represent less than 2% of the total population of Pakistan, a disproportionate number of blasphemy cases involve Christians... 20 or 30% of cases involve Christians," he added.
