The Bishop of Aberdeen and Orkney has announced her retirement after nine years in the role.

Rt Rev Anne Dyer made history in 2018 when she became the first female Scottish bishop in the Episcopal Church, but long-running accusations of bullying, suspensions and internal church conflict have heavily overshadowed her tenure.

Five years ago, multiple clergy, lay preachers, and church staff reported that she used an aggressive and shouting tone, which created a culture of fear and left several individuals deeply distressed, charges she has always denied. 

As a result, she was suspended whilst an investigation took place, but in 2025 the church's independent procurator reviewed the evidence and decided it was not in the public interest to pursue matters any further.

She then returned to ministry in early 2025 and has now announced her retirement in February, when she turns 70. 

Speaking on the announcement, Bishop Dyer wrote: "Through times that have been both joyful and sometimes very challenging, it has been a privilege to serve as your bishop.

"I am much changed by this experience, and very grateful to God for all the grace and encouragement I have received."

Of her remaining time in the role, she added: "I will look forward to worshipping with as many of you as possible and continuing to give attention to the many projects that are in progress."

She thanked the diocese for its support and said it had been a privilege to serve as bishop.
