Asia Bibi to appeal death sentence

Asia Bibi is now taking her case to the country's Supreme Court after her appeal last week failed.

The mother-of-five was convicted of defiling the name of Islam's Prophet Muhammad after an argument with Muslims co-workers.

In 2009, her fellow workers refused to drink from a water well she had touched because she was not Muslim.

She was sentenced to hanging after being found guilty of blasphemy in November 2010, but has launched several appeals.

Last week the Appeal Court upheld the initial verdict.

Ms Bibi's lawyer, Naeem Shakir, told CNN: "I have a very strong case, I am sure the Supreme Court will provide us with relief.

"There is no concrete evidence against Asia Bibi, and the courts are only relying on the statement on those two women."

Nasir Saeed, director the Centre for Legal Aid, Assistance and Settlement (CLAAS), an interdenominational organisation working for Christians who are being persecuted because of their faith in Pakistan said: "I have to now remain hopeful that the Supreme Court judges will look at the case objectively and allow the final appeal, eventually acquitting Asia."
