by Lydia Davies

The Archbishop of Canterbury and leader of the Anglican Communion, Justin Welby has arrived in Ukraine for a five-day visit. This marks his second trip to the war-torn nation since the Russian invasion began in February 2022.

Most Rev Justin Welby said that his last visit Ukraine in December 2022 stayed with him and he felt a ‘’deep call to return’’.

With the country approaching the second anniversary of the conflict, Archbishop Justin's visit carries immense significance, offering a powerful message of solidarity and support to the Ukrainian people and churches.

In a message posted to his social media platform, Archbishop Justin' wrote: ‘’I have come here to stand with our Ukrainian sisters and brothers; to pray with and for them, to learn from them and to say loud and clear that, amid all that is going on in other places, the world will not forget Ukraine’’.

His visit commenced with a meeting with the congregation of Christ Church, Kyiv, a small Anglican church in the capital. During his visit, he focused on prayer, listening, and learning about the war's impact on individuals and communities.

Archbishop Justin' will also engage in meetings with church leaders and representatives from various humanitarian organisations, aiming to understand the current needs and strengthen relationships between the Anglican Communion and the Ukrainian churches.

As the war continues to cast a shadow over Ukraine, Archbishop Justin' visit serves as a testament to the unwavering support of the Anglican Communion and offers a crucial platform for amplifying the voices of those affected by the conflict. His presence in the midst of hardship provides a message of hope and resilience, reminding the world of the enduring strength of faith and the importance of standing with those in need.
