Sergio Gutiérrez Benítez, the Mexican priest and former wrestler who inspired the film Nacho Libre, is facing serious health challenges at the age of 79.
Gutiérrez, known for his wrestling persona Fray Tormenta, is battling multiple medical issues, including loss of eyesight and heart, prostate, and kidney problems.
Gutiérrez secretly took up lucha libre wrestling to raise funds for an orphanage he founded in Texcoco, Mexico.
According to The Times, over four decades, his winnings supported the care of 2,500 children, making him a local hero and an international symbol of sacrifice.
Now, as his medical bills accumulate, supporters have stepped in to help.
Andrea Sánchez, a 25-year-old from Puebla, Mexico, was inspired to start a GoFundMe campaign after discovering Gutiérrez’s story on TikTok.
The fundraiser has already raised over 100,000 pesos (£3,880), providing much-needed relief for Gutiérrez's healthcare expenses.
Sánchez said she was moved by his story, calling it “unfair” for a man who had helped so many to struggle alone.
Gutiérrez now lives with Crispín Bautista Alvalle, one of the orphans he raised, who has taken on the Fray Tormenta mask and continues the wrestling legacy.
Bautista said they are determined to preserve Gutiérrez’s name and ensure his contribution to the community is never forgotten.
Gutiérrez, reflecting on his life, told the outlet that he remains hopeful and at peace with his future.
"I’m not in a hurry," he said, trusting that his legacy will live on through those he helped.
