Caroline Spelman MP told members in York that the staff member who manages her diary asked her who General Synod was.
"As an MP I'm used to putting up Synod members in my home when it takes place in London," she said, "but this did cause my diary secretary to challenge me over who General Synod really was".
The Former Environment Secretary was named Second Church Estates Commissioner in May after the Conservative Party won a majority in the election.
She replaced Sir Tony Baldry who retired before the General Election, and this was her maiden speech at General Synod.
It's claimed the secretary thought General Synod was a member of staff at the Ministry of Defence.
