'We want this horror to finish': Ukrainan Pastor stays in Kyiv to help citizens

by Alex Collett

A Church pastor in the capital of Ukraine has decided to stay, amidst the bombing in the city, to help his fellow community.

Pastor Victor Polunin from Gospel of God's Grace Church - part of the Harvesters Ministries - based in Kyiv, is helping to provide aid to those in crisis.

It is estimated that more than 1 million people have fled Ukraine since the Russian invasion began.

Pastor Polunin spoke to Premier and described the ways they are helping: "We have people who work as volunteers, we have people like myself and my wife who organised social service and distributing food.

"We also organised a social centre, where we collect food bags for families, and distribute them among people who stayed here and usually those people would be people in desperate need.

"It would be either older people or people with small little babies, it would be people who are in a family.

"Many with children and it would be people with handicapped children even."

Pastor Polunin expresses the waves of emotions that he and his wife feel knowing they are in the heart of the war zone.

"We have all kinds of different feelings and sometimes we experience huge stress, hearing all explosions and bombs.

"It's like a roller coaster, sometimes your emotions go very down, but when you start to pray and worship and find your protection in him, you find that your spirit is lifted up.

"We listen to God, he has given us words, he has given us scriptures, and he has helped us to understand his foundation.

"We pray and constantly fast with people from our church and from other churches.

Pastor Polunin mentioned one scripture in particular that God gave to him: "One Psalm he shared with me is Psalm 91, where God is saying he is taking care for us and we are protected by him and he is our shelter and stronghold."

Pastor Polunin has asked people to pray for the Ukrainian people, he said: "Can you pray for us, that this will be come to an end?

"Can you pray for safety for protection of people? There are a lot of people dying at this moment and a lot of children suffer.

"I think its 1.5 million of people who left Ukraine already, and a lot more of them trying to escape.

"We want this horror to finish.

"Second of all, pray for protection, pray that God, God's people will not be in despair, broken, that their faith will be strengthened.

"Pray that other people who do not know Jesus would have opportunity to hear the gospel through Christians, and their hearts would be open, pray for revival.

"Pray for provision, pray that people who will stand on the age of just surviving, will have food to eat water to drink and security."
