'We’re so used to young people dying here': Clashes in Jerusalem leave 31 injured

by Sophie Drew

Police have stormed the Al-Aqsa mosque, detonating tear gas and firing rubber bullets; it is believed 31 people have been injured.

Officers claim they were responding to reports of young Palestinian boys throwing stones.

The clashes have been ongoing for a month, as the three Abrahamic religions each mark a religious occasion; Easter, Ramadan and Passover.

Last year, similar unrest led to an 11-day war.

Over the last week, more than 200 people have been injured in and around the compound.

Paul Calvert is a Christian living in Bethlehem. He said: “We need to pray, particularly for the young people.

“I feel really, really sad for young Palestinian Muslim boys who were being taught a rhetoric of hatred and throwing stones.

“I went up on the Temple Mount once and saw a five-year-old boy, and he picked up a stone and a Jew walked past and he threw it.

"Why did he pick up that stone in the first place?

“We need to be praying that God would intervene and speak into these young hearts and these young lives.

“We’re so used to young people dying here – 18 or 19-year-olds dying for the cause.

“It's so sad.

“We need to pray that they will not get caught up in this rhetoric. They may not agree with Israel, they may not agree with everything that happens, but throwing stones isn't the answer.”
