Venezuelan children in need of ‘urgent assistance’, warns World Vision

by James Lewis

Vulnerable children and families in Venezuela are in urgent need of protection, according to Christian charity World Vision.

The humanitarian organisation is urging the international community to support the vulnerable, amid US intervention in the country.

Five million people face hunger within the country, with seven million refugees spread across neighbouring nations, according to the charity. Six in ten Venezuelan migrant children are facing food insecurity.

Joao Diniz, World Vision’s regional leader for Latin America, said: “Millions of Venezuelans dream of returning home, yet they face severe challenges in accessing basic services such as health, education, nutrition, and child protection.

“In times of uncertainty, children are the most at risk. We must ensure their psychosocial and physical protection.”

World Vision’s ‘Hope Without Borders’ programme has supported those fleeing violence, hunger and economic collapse, which had grown over the past few years. The programme provides essential aid and opportunities for families.

It operates in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Panama and Venezuela.

Host countries now require “additional resources”, the charity said, “to maintain stability and ensure dignity for all".

“World Vision is calling on the international community to provide urgent assistance to protect vulnerable families and children,” the charity said, adding that it "urges governments, donors, and humanitarian actors to join efforts in addressing this regional crisis and safeguarding the future of children and families affected".
