by Hannah Tooley

Timothy Dolan visited families in Erbil in Iraq, toured churches and met worshipers that that had been displaced by Islamic State (IS) in the region.

The Cardinal told displaced families and children: "Please, hear us say we love you, we need you, we cannot forget you."

He was spreading hope and encouraging Christians to stay faithful in the face of persecution, according to The New York Post.

He said: "We say to you no. Here is where the church is alive.

"You, you will be the apostles. You will be the heralds. You will help convert the world. You are teaching us."

Cardinal Dolan's visit was designed to show solidarity with church leaders and priests who have suffered since Islamic State (IS) took over parts of the country in 2014.

He led delegation of Catholic officials from New America and the group visited a medical centre and celebrated Mass together.

Cardinal Dolan also visited a camp for displaced families, who were mainly Christians, and listened to their stories as well as a school.

It is thought as many as ten million people live in areas controlled by IS in the Middle East.
