Trial of former Catholic priest on sexual assault charges to begin in Canada

The trial of a former Catholic priest accused of historical sexual abuse, begins Monday 20th Feburary at the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit, Canada.

Eric Dejaeger faces eight counts of sexual assault linked to his time as a priest in Igloolik between 1978 and 1982, according to court records.

The allegations were investigated between 2011 and 2015.

Accoridng to CBC, the 76-year-old was arrested in Kingston, Ontario, in June 2023 and transported to Iqaluit.

He was granted bail under the condition that he reside at Kingston’s Henry Traill Community Correctional Centre, which provides 24-hour supervision.

The trial, set to be judge-only, is expected to last two weeks.
