Tim Keller calls for prayer as cancer update reveals new tumours

by Heather Preston

Christian pastor and theologian Tim Keller has shared an update on his battle with cancer, asking people to pray after doctors revealed new tumours have been found.

The renowned apologist was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in May 2020, aged 69 and has undergone numerous rounds of chemotherapy as well as immunotherapy treatment. In April, Keller will undergo a second round of immunotherapy to target newly developed tumours.

Throughout his cancer journey Keller has spoken of his commitment to pray for healing following his diagnosis. On Sunday, he called on friends to join him in praying "for trust and dependence on God," for his "providential oversight" and for God to be glorified " in whatever comes our way."

Sharing an update on Twitter, Keller wrote: "Dear Praying Friends, I will shortly be returning to the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD in order to spend April doing a variation of the immunotherapy that I received last June. It was successful in eradicating 99% of the tumors. However, new tumors have developed.

"They are unfortunately in some fairly inconvenient places, so the doctors encouraged us to go through the treatment again, this time targeting a different genetic marker of the cancer.

"It was brutal last June, so we approach this with an awareness of how much prayer we need.

"Please pray for our trust and dependence on God, for his providential oversight of the medical preparations now in process, and for our desire to glorify God in whatever comes our way. Thank You."

Keller, who also survived thyroid cancer - which he had in 2002 - previously told Premier's Unbelievable? that despite doctors telling him his stage four pancreatic cancer was incurable he would continue to pray for healing and trust in God's will for his life.

"God can do it or he doesn't have to do it," he said. "The fact that I may not get that is something that I have to say, 'Okay, God knows'."
