Thousands of Islamic State accounts operating on Twitter

The Isis Twitter Census has also revealed that typical IS supporters are located within the militants' territories in Iraq and Syria.

Three-quarters of them tweet in Arabic and about one-in-five use English averaging around one thousand followers.

Christian professor Nick Megoran who's is a lecturer on religion and the church at Newcastle University has urged Christians in the UK to do more to encourage people way from supporting Islamic State, speaking on Premier's 'News Hour' , he said: "Our job as the Church is to articulate a better vision, 'come and join us'.

"By joining his Church you change the world, not through beheading and hating your enemies but through loving them and giving your life for them. In Christ you can find love and purpose."

On Thursday a chemistry teacher who defied pleas from his pregnant wife not go to fight in Syria has been jailed for six years.

Jamshed Javeed from Manchester was poised to travel in late 2013 and join Islamic State after he admitted two terror offences at Woolwich Crown Court.

Twitter's user policy prohibits the use of the service for violence and threats, stating on its website: "You may not publish or post direct, specific threats of violence against others," however the company has said it doesn't 'proactively' monitor content.

Twitter's platform, which allows people to post 140-character messages with pictures and brief video clips, has more than 288 million users across the world.
