Thousands gather for inaugural Gospel Garden festival in London

by Premier Journalist

Thousands of gospel music fans gathered at Crystal Palace Bowl in London on Sunday for the inaugural Gospel Garden festival, featuring performances from some of the biggest names in Christian music.

The event brought together artists including Kirk Franklin, Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Fred Hammond, Mercy Chinwo and British singer Jerub for what organisers hope will become a regular fixture on the UK's gospel music calendar.

Festivalgoers described the atmosphere as one of worship and community.

"It just felt like one big family reunion... everyone just came to worship," one attendee said.

British artist Jerub opened the festival before Nigerian gospel singer Mercy Chinwo took to the stage.

"Mercy's voice... so piercing and clear. God has placed an anointing on her life," another festivalgoer said.

Veteran gospel artist Fred Hammond performed songs including Jesus Be a Fence and Jesus Be the Centre of My Joy, while Tasha Cobbs Leonard led thousands in worship.

US gospel star Kirk Franklin closed the event with a headline set featuring songs spanning more than three decades of his career.

Attendees also praised the festival's production, including its staging, lighting and sound.

"The stage lighting with the music made it a feast for my eyes," one visitor said.

Some festivalgoers highlighted areas for improvement, including long queues at food vendors and limited views from parts of the VIP area. However, many said these were minor issues for a first-time event.

One attendee rated the day "9 out of 10", adding: "Overall, it was splendid."

Premier Gospel Station Director Muyiwa Olarewaju OBE said the festival marked an important moment for gospel music in Britain.

"Gospel Garden didn't merely present outstanding artists. It proved that gospel music can fill a major outdoor venue, attract diverse audiences and create an atmosphere unlike any other festival in Britain," he said.

The festival was supported by Premier Gospel and is expected to return next year following a successful debut.
