Theresa May pays tribute to MP turned priest

Rev George Thompson passed away at Senwick Nursing Home in Borgue in Scotland.

He served the people of Galloway in parliament on behalf of the SNP for five years during the seventies before joining the priesthood a decade later.

During Wednesday's PMQs, Angus Robertson (below) from the SNP said Fr Thompson led a "remarkable life" and that he extended his sympathies to the family.

In her response Theresa May also offered condolences before paying tribute to who she described as "the first modern MP in modern times to be ordained a Catholic priest".

Speaking after his death, Bishop William Nolan, the Bishop of Galloway paid tribute to Fr Thompson who died peacefully on 23 December 2016.

Bishop Nolan said: "Father George Thompson was a man whose life was inspired and motivated by a deep faith in Jesus Christ.

"A faith he put into practice by embracing three vocations: teaching, politics and the priesthood. In each of these he sought to serve God and to serve others.

"We give thanks to God for all the good that he did throughout his life."
