The Force Awakens Berlin churchgoers

Around 500 people attended Berlin's Zion Church as it marked the release of 'The Force Awakens'.

Many were wearing costumes - sporting Darth Vader masks and carrying lightsabers whilst the church organ played the theme tune from the series.

Pastor Lucas Ludewig said that he was "very happy to see so many people in the church".

The church leaders used the Star Wars story to refer to themes in the Bible of good overcoming evil and drew a number of parallels between the films and New Testament principles.

Ulrike Garve, a vicar in training, said that they "wanted to make churchgoers aware of these analogies" and particularly aimed the service at younger people.

The new Star Wars film is set to break box office records, taking an estimated £160million in its opening weekend.
