'The Dwelling Place': the new name of Vineyard Anaheim after split

Former Vineyard Anaheim church has officially become the Dwelling place months after splitting from the charismatic movement, Vineyard USA.

Pastor Alan Scott revealed the new name during a Sunday sermon on 24th April, he said: "I love that it's not just 'Dwelling Place,' but it is 'Dwelling Place Anaheim'".

In March, Pastor Alan and his wife Kathryn announced that the church would be splitting from the Vineyard denomination without giving a specific reason for the decision.

The couple said they felt "an invitation to take another step of faith into the unknown" and took the decision to leave "reverently in the fear of the Lord."

They had been leading the church for four years.

During his sermon, Pastor Alan said the church's leaders wanted to the city of Anaheim to become a "dwelling place of God."

"We want people in this city to know that he is their God and that they are His people. And so, as we step into this new part of our story together as a house, as a community together, it's not a departure from what has gone before.

"In fact, we're just continuing the story that we've been engaged in together, and the bookends of the story of God is that God's dwelling place is with His people, and that's who we are we are, a dwelling for and by His spirit," he continued.

Pastor Alan also said that there was no "divine" explanation for the name.

"I wish I could say to that, on, whatever day it is, April the 8th or something like this, the angel of the Lord appeared to me and said, 'Behold, this is your new name,'" he said. "But that didn't happen."

Instead he shared several Bible verses about God dwelling among his people.

"It [the name] reminds us that God is making everything new," he said, "that one day all of humanity and all of history ends up at the feet of Jesus and God's dwelling place is with us."

Vineyard Anaheim was considered for many the "mother church" of the Vineyard movement since it was first planted in 1977 and many of the 1,500 Vineyard churches worldwide started there.

There are very little details about the Dwelling Place Anaheim but the church's website say that the church's leaders believe they are "stepping into the story of God not just for the sake of the Church but for the sake of the world."
