Tearfund has reported the tragic deaths of two of its aid workers in a violent attack in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on Sunday, 30th June 2024.
According to a statement on their website, the aid workers were part of a convoy travelling from Lubero to Butembo when they were ambushed and killed.
Tearfund, a non-political aid organisation dedicated to providing humanitarian assistance, expressed its profound sorrow over the loss and strongly condemned the attack on its staff members. The organisation highlighted that these workers were committed to serving the most vulnerable communities within the DRC.
Their statement read in part: "Our priority now is to offer our full support to the families of our colleagues who have lost their lives in this senseless act of violence.
"We are also coordinating closely with local authorities to enhance the security measures for our remaining staff in the region."
Tearfund has called upon all factions within the DRC to honour international laws that protect aid workers and ensure their safety as they perform critical humanitarian work.
