Bishop T.D. Jakes made an emotional return to the pulpit on New Year's Eve, sharing his harrowing experience of a health crisis that nearly cost him his life.
The founder of The Potter's House megachurch in Dallas, Texas, revealed that a medical emergency on 24 November required immediate surgery, with doctors warning that a delay of just five minutes could have been fatal.
Addressing his congregation with vulnerability, Jakes admitted to feeling anxious about standing in the same spot where he had collapsed weeks earlier.
"In fact, I think I did die," he said, "but God, in His infinite wisdom and grace, brought me back."
During the incident, which was captured on video, Jakes appeared to experience seizure-like symptoms while preaching.
Concerned members of his team quickly intervened as congregants prayed fervently before the livestream was cut.
Although Jakes did not disclose specific details about his condition, he hinted at heart-related complications.
He expressed deep gratitude to Dr Joseph Amos, a member of his church and chief of staff at Southern Methodist Hospital, who oversaw his care during the critical hours, as reported by The Christian Post.
"They almost lost me twice," Jakes shared. "But every time my numbers dropped, your prayers prevailed, and I'm standing here today by the grace of God. Death had to back up off of me."
Reflecting on his recovery, Jakes revealed that he had no memory of parts of the incident and only fully understood the gravity of the situation after watching the recording from his hospital bed.
In his triumphant return, Jakes humorously referred to himself as "Bishop Lazarus," addressing rumours of his death and emphasising God's faithfulness in his recovery.
He also thanked his congregation for their unwavering prayers and support.
"On behalf of my family, I honour God and thank every intercessor who went to war in prayer on my behalf," he concluded.
