Syrian Christian women fight against Islamic State

They are now the second female force formed to fight IS, the first was created by Kurdish women, known as YPG.

36-year-old Babylonia has joined, she said that she does not regret leaving her profession as a hairdresser because she is creating a safer future for her family.

Speaking in The Guardian she said: "I miss Limar and Gabriella [her children] and worry that they must be hungry, thirsty and cold.

"But I try to tell them that I'm fighting to protect their future."

Her force, a Syriac Christian group, the Female Protection Forces of the Land Between the Two Rivers, between Tigris and Euphrates, has around 50 fighters at present.

Their first major action took place with Kurdish, Christian and Arab fighters. 

Syriacs are part of an eastern Christian group who pray in Aramatic and make up about 15% of Syrian Christians.

Syria's Chrisitian populaion, both Orthodox and Catholic, numbers around 1.2 million people.
