The survey, conducted by Gallup, showed that Mississippi remains to most religious state in the country with 59 per cent of the population describing themselves as "very religious".
Alabama (56 per cent) and Utah (54 per cent) took the second and third positions.

The results were based on responses from 174,969 interviewees. Gallup classified respondents as "very religious", "moderately religious" or "nonreligious" based on responses to questions about the importance of religion and worship service attendance.

According to the survey, Vermont (21 per cent) is the least religious state followed by Maine (23 per cent).
Gallup has been tracking religious indicators since 2008. The data collection site said the Americans classified as "very religious" has declined slightly in that period with 41 per cent described as "very religious" in 2008 to 38 per cent in 2016.
