Street preacher criticised for holding ‘Santa is fake’ sign outside school

by Kelly Valencia

A former street preacher is facing criticism and controversy for donning a Grinch costume and positioning himself outside a U.S. elementary school, holding a sign that declared 'Santa is fake. Jesus is real.'

The incident occurred during school pick-up time, and 63-year-old David Grisham claims he was assaulted while exercising what he believes to be his First Amendment rights.

In a Facebook post, Grisham recounted the incident, stating that the police intervened to prevent him from expressing his views freely.

A video posted on YouTube captures Grisham asserting that he believes in not lying to children, moments before a brief scuffle with an approaching man, presumably a parent.

Despite the altercation, Grisham insisted on delivering his message, stating in his damaged sign, "Hundreds of children heard the message and many parents as well," expressing dismay at what he sees as society protecting what he deems a "lie."

Amarillo Police clarified that Grisham was lawfully on the sidewalk and had not violated any laws, leading to his avoidance of arrest.

The aftermath of Grisham's protest is evident in the 321 comments on his Facebook post, where opinions were sharply divided.

Criticisms ranged from accusations of being a terrible person and lacking Christian values to encroaching on the freedoms of parents and children.

Some questioned his choice to target the innocence of children, asserting that it was not within his purview to disrupt the festive spirit and traditions.
