Spanish church faces £14,000 fine for noisy bells

by Aaron James

Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Mostoles, south-west of Madrid, faces the fine after complaints from residents.

The regulations on the church dictate that the bells must register at 55 decibels. Technicians found them to be 85 decibels.

Experts say normal conversation produces 55-60 decibels while an airplane in flight produces 110-120 decibels.

Parish priest Fr Ignacio Torres told El Pais newspaper he had no idea how he'd pay the fine if it's enforced.

Eduardo Gutierrez, the town planning spokesman, told local press that "the town council had to act after receiving complaints about the noise from those living nearby".

Local conservative politicians have criticised the local council for persecuting the church, reinforcing the bells historic position in the town.

Church authorities are waiting for official notice of the fine.
