A Catholic priest in Sierra Leone was murdered just hours before he was due to celebrate a farewell Mass and begin a new pastoral assignment.
Father Augustine Dauda Amadu, parish priest of Immaculate Conception Church in Kenema, was killed overnight on 29th August in his parish residence
The 30th August Mass would have marked the end of his five years of service in the parish before he was due to take up a new mission at St John Parish in Kailahun, also within the Diocese of Kenema.
According to local church sources, Fr Amadu was alone in his residence when unknown assailants broke in during the night.
Sierra Leone Police confirmed that the priest was stabbed to death and that entry to the house was gained through a damaged window. It remains unclear whether anything was stolen.
The Diocese of Kenema has expressed shock and grief at the loss of Fr Amadu, remembering him as a faithful and committed servant of the Church
His death has sparked widespread sorrow in the local Catholic community, where he was well known for his pastoral care and dedication.
Police received the report early on the morning of 30th August after parishioners arriving for Mass discovered signs of forced entry
A full investigation is underway. As of 3rd September, no suspects had been arrested.
