Secret staircase to 400-year-old vault unearthed in French church
by Anna Rees
Excavators working on a Medieval church in France have uncovered a secret staircase, leading to a hidden vault.
Saint-Philibert Church in Dijon has been standing for over 800 years. Researchers from the Institut national de recherches archéologiques préventives (INRAP) discovered that the staircase itself was at least 400 years old, and had been sealed since the 1940s.

Following the secret pathway led them to a room full of coffins, containing the bones of children and adults.
It described the bodies as “well wrapped” in shrouds, with a couple of rosaries and coins found alongside them.
