Rev Calvin Robinson sacked by GB News alongside Laurence Fox

by Will Hobbs

Rev Calvin Robinson has been sacked by GB News, joining fellow presenter Laurence Fox in dismissal.

The sackings follow comments Fox made on Dan Wootton's programme, on which he asked what "self-respecting man" would "climb into bed" with political journalist, Ava Evans. GB News say Wootton is still being investigated.

In a video statement on X, Robinson said he had told his "friend" Laurence Fox that his comments on air had been "crass" and that he "shouldn't have said that." He described his role at GB news as "a mission to do God's work" and believes that the channel's "project (of free speech) is doomed".

Robinson also suggested that himself, Fox and Wootton were already being "edged out" prior to the Fox incident, because one of the channel's main stakeholders is looking to purchase The Telegraph, and does not want "any question marks" against their reputation.

He then claimed his Christian views were seen as bigoted within the channel and that there are "a lot of people there that hate the presenters".

Robinson, who is also the Deacon at Christ Church Harlesden in North West London, was suspended on Friday after writing on social media that the channel's bosses were "scared" of Ofcom, the national broadcast regulator, and "the woke mob".

Robinson also spoke of “careerist” staff at GB News who wanted Wootton’s presenting slot.

“These people are worse than the woke mob, because these vultures are giving the mob ammunition and essentially escalating the channel’s demise,” he said.

He added that GB News would be on “borrowed time” if it did not stand by Wootton.

“I get that people have to pay the bills. But GB News is more than a job. It’s certainly more than a chance to be on the telly. It is a mission,” he continued. “An opportunity to shift the dial in public discourse. To have the conversations the shills on other channels cannot or will not have. We must do all we can to avoid GB News becoming just another MSM outlet. Which it will, if we let it.”

Robinson claimed that the bosses of GB News were “afraid” and that if someone took Wootton’s slot it would not be a promotion but “making space alongside his corpse for your own”.

In a statement on Wednesday, GB News said: "Laurence Fox and Calvin Robinson were both suspended last week pending internal investigations that have now concluded.

"As of today, GB News has ended its employment relationship with Laurence Fox and Calvin Robinson.

"The internal investigation into Dan Wootton continues."

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Friday, GB News chief executive Angelos Frangopoulos said Fox's remarks were "appalling" and "way past the limits of acceptance".

He said: "We are about free speech, but it's about being done in a respectful and proper way, and that was not the way that that conversation played out."

He added: "That comment should not have gone to air and that should have been properly challenged, quite frankly."
