Religious freedom 'most important issue facing UK'

David Burrowes said religious freedom is the most important issue facing the world and the UK and that failing to take action was not an option.

He said protecting freedom of belief had links to terrorism, people trafficking and heritage destruction.

"The government has been more proactive in speaking about it," he said.

"We have particularly strong soft power diplomatically as a country and I think we need to keep on all international channels raising the issue of religious freedom."

The MP also urged Christians to consider prospective MPs policies on the persecuted Church before casting their vote in May's election.

He said: "The universal freedom of religious belief is something which must be held tightly in this country and I think it's important everyone holds their individual candidates for the coming election to account on how seriously they're going to take it."

Christians are being persecuted in countries across the world but particularly in the Middle East and parts of Africa.

In Iraq and Syria thousands have been killed by Islamic State as it takes over large parts of the countries.

Meanwhile in Nigeria Boko Haram militants have carried out several terrorist attacks on Christians.

Last year the group abducted more than two hundred mostly Christian school girls.
