Record numbers of Danes leave Church amid atheist campaign

by Antony Bushfield

Figures showed 10,300 rejected the denomination in the second quarter of 2016, that's the highest number since records began.

The number is four times higher than same period last year.

It's thought one of the main driving forces behind the exodus is a campaign from the Danish Atheist Society.

A large advertising campaign encouraged Danish people to consider why they believe in God and why they had to pay church taxes, around £15,000 in the average person's lifetime.

The group also created a website that gave easy instructions on how to leave the church.

To leave Danes must submit a written application.

According to Danish website The Local Anders Gadegaard, the dean of Copenhagen's Church of Our Lady, agreed the atheist campaign was the main reason for the decline.
