Pronoun bill passed in Cali causes stir: It goes against ‘God’s natural order’

by Heather Preston

The California State senate has passed a bill that prohibits schools from notifying parents if their child is using a new pronoun at school.

The Assembly Bill 1955 prohibits school districts from requiring teachers and school officials to “disclose any information related to a pupil’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression to any other person without the pupil’s consent.”

Last week, the bill passed the CA Senate with a party-line vote of 29-8 with supporters saying it would protect students and their decision to ‘come out’ to their families on their own terms.

Critics of the bill, also known as the Support Academic Futures and Educators for Today’s Youth Act (SAFETY Act) argue it undermines parental rights and creates a “government-imposed wall” between parents and their children.

Assemblyman Jim Patterson dubbed the bill “evil” and damaging to the parent-child relationship.

Pastor Brandon Campbell of the Capital Baptists for Biblical Values said the bill "goes against God's natural order" and contradicts biblical teaching.

"Anytime you go against God’s natural order, you will cause substantial damage, and damage always starts with the children,” Campbell stated.

The California Family Council said it represented an “unprecedented overreach by the government” into “sacred” family bonds.

“Parents have a God-given responsibility to guide and protect their children, especially during times of confusion and vulnerability,” CFC Vice President Greg Burt said. He argues the bill undermines the rights of parents and isolates children from “the very people who love and care for them the most.”

The bill states that: “LGBTQ+ pupils have the right to express themselves freely at school without fear, punishment, or retaliation, including that teachers or administrators might ‘out’ them without their permission.”

The California Family Council is calling for parental rights to be upheld to ensure “families, not the government are at the centre of raising our children.”
