Prominent Catholic LGBT campaigner arrested in Uganda

by Hannah Tooley

Frank Mugisha was one of many arrested following a Pride fashion show in the capital Kampala.

The arrests come as Uganda pushes tighter control over bans on same-sex relationships, according to The Tablet.

Homosexuality is illegal in the country and in 2009 an MP attempted to bring forward a law introducing the death penalty for gay and lesbian people engaging in homosexual activity.

The international community condemned the proposed bill, and a less strict version was passed.

Anti-homosexual laws are in place in 34 of 55 African states, according to the United Nations.

In Sudan, southern Somalia, Mauritania, and northern Nigeria it is a capital punishment offence to engage in homosexual activity.

South Africa has the most liberal attitudes towards same-sex couples and same-sex marriage is legal.
