McBride, 27, was found dead at his home on Sunday night. The cause of his passing is unknown.
Hundreds of people attended a Requiem Mass at St Columba's Long Tower Catholic Church earlier today. It is the same church that will host the funeral for Martin McGuinness this afternoon.
Mourners dressed in the team colours of red, white and black.
Team-mates walked alongside the hearse as it approached the church.
Fr Aidan Mullen said McBride was an athlete in his prime who had made the team supporters proud in the seven years he played at the club.
He told the mourners: "Ryan would put his head where other players would not put their boot."
The priest added that he was an inspirational leader in the dressing room and on the field.
This is the third tragedy to strike Derry City FC in just over a year.
Ex-striker Mark Farren died from a brain tumour last February. He was 33 years old.
Josh Daniels, another player at the club, lost his mother, sister, brother-in-law and nephews in the Buncrana pier tragedy last March. A car slid off the pier and entered Lough Swilly.
