An American priest was killed in a suspected violent burglary in Malaga, Spain, on the first day of his holiday, sparking concerns among locals about rising crime targeting tourists.
Father Richard Gross, 80, was found dead in his holiday apartment on 21st January, with forensic reports indicating he suffered facial injuries and strangulation.
Spanish police believe he was the victim of a robbery, as his suitcase and belongings were missing from the scene.
CCTV footage reportedly captured one of the attackers leaving the apartment carrying two bags belonging to him.
A Moroccan man has been arrested in connection with the crime, but two other suspects remain at large.
Local residents fear that criminals are preying on tourists, believing them to be vulnerable and unlikely to report crimes. Some have called for increased police presence and surveillance to address growing safety concerns.
According to The Mirror, Father Gross, a Boston-based priest, had dedicated his life to teaching history and theology at Boston College High School and Phillips Academy in Andover.
Ordained in 1976, he was a beloved figure in his community, officiating weddings and baptisms for many families over the decades.
His nephew, Dicky Barrett, paid tribute, recalling his uncle’s kindness and dedication. “He was an educator who left a lasting impact on his students and a deeply loved member of our family. I love you, Uncle Duke.”
Boston College High School also released a statement mourning his passing: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Father Gross’ family, his Jesuit brothers, and all those blessed by his ministry and friendship.”
Spanish authorities continue their manhunt for the remaining suspects, as investigations into the tragic killing continue.
