A controversial moment at this year’s Belfast Pride has drawn strong criticism from Christian groups after a man dressed to resemble Jesus, with a mock crown of thorns, was seen dancing and high-fiving spectators during the parade.

The image, initially shared by activist group Progressive Politics NI, showed the man in a white robe, red sash, and large gold cross, posing with two women, one in a transgender flag, the other appearing as an angel with a rainbow halo.

TUV Equality Spokeswoman Ann McClure called the act “extremely offensive to Christians” and told the NewsLetter that "there would have been no question of Mohammed being mocked in such a fashion."

She said the display confirmed her party’s concerns about the event pushing “contentious political demands".

McClure criticised parade marshals for not intervening and urged public bodies like the BBC and Civil Service to consider religious protections under Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act before participating in future Pride events.

Progressive Politics NI has since removed the image from its Facebook page.

Premier has reached out to Belfast Pride for a comment.
